Every Day is Memorial Day

My local newspaper, THE SOUTHAMPTON PRESS, had that headline today.
The story was about the mom of a young Marine who was killed in Afghanistan.  I remember when his body was brought home, the highway was lined for miles with police, service people and friends.
Time passes, people forget, but the parents never do, and their hearts are heavy every day.
On this Memorial Day, I hope we remember not only the men and women who gave their lives, but the families they left behind.
May God bless them all!
I did a little table in their honor.
Let's Dish 654
A  red striped duvet cover from Pottery Barn with a blue cloth on top.
Let's Dish 658I used a blue glass as a vase for some red roses, bacopa, and flags.  I placed a dark blue napkin with white embroidered stars under it, and surrounded it with red star cookie cutters from Pottery Barn Outlet.
Let's Dish 648
Red flatware from Cambridge, white charger Noritake, Blue plate CTS, covered soup bowl World Market.
Napkins from Kohls, napkin ring, CTS.
Let's Dish 661
The red stems and red candleholders are from CTS also.
Let's Dish 658
I would invite my classmate Whitey who was killed while serving with the Marines in Vietnam shortly after we graduated.  He had white blond hair, hence the name.  He was a gentle giant.
Let's Dish 659
I would also invite my friend Marine Gen. Frank Libutti.  We grew up together in Huntington.  Frank retired a few years ago after many years of service to our country.
We can never thank them enough for the sacrifices they and their  families made for us.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day, fly your flag, and say a prayer for those who have died, those who are injured and the ones who do their job everyday protecting us.

  6. Beautiful table and an even more beautiful post. I love your simple words of encouragement in remembrance. We will remember my FIL who served in WW2 and passed last year to cancer. He carried those memories of service with him his whole life, of the battles fought and lives lost. They were bittersweet for him but so very honorable for us.

  9. Just this week a friend of ours died from complications of being exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. Even years later, the effects of the war are still invasive.

  32. Such a great remembrance of those who serve. My son and DIL are both in the service so for our family, so we focus on some aspect of military service nearly every day. My son currently stationed in Germany called me last week to tell me that this memorial day he and his friends were participating in a 24-hour run, in honor of the POWS and MIAs. I was so touched that members of our service were marking the weekend by setting up a running path on their military installation, running for 24 hours nonstop, carrying a POW/MIA flag, handing off to a comrade every mile and a half for 24 hours. My son said it was so moving.

  36. It's a beautiful table and a beautiful post, Kathleen. I have been moved lately at the thought of the personal sacrifice of families whose loved one went to do what I could not do and never made it home.

May they be comforted and blessed to know that when we say the words, "the prayers of a grateful nation", we really and truly mean it.

    Have a wonderful Memorial Day.

  38. Beautifully written, Kathleen! I agree with everything you said. I hadn't thought about it this way before, but every day is Memorial Day when you've lost a loved one.

I LOVE your table (as usual). This is one of my favorites, though. It's so pretty, cheerful and festive. It's just hard to beat a red, white and blue table in the summer. I love all your linens, the flatware, the red, covered soup bowls, and especially your centerpiece. Lovely fresh flowers in such a pretty blue vase. This is a wonderful tribute post, Kathleen. Thanks for sharing.
