Last week, it was brutally hot. Even here on the east end of the island, the humidity was wicked!
We have had a break in the heat, and I hope you have too!
I met my dear friend in Hampton Bays for lunch. We opted to sit in the tiny room inside, there was a wait for a table outside.
It was cooler inside, but with the door open, the flies were annoying. Can you tell I never wanted to go camping? :)
This is the Shinnecock Canal. You have to cross over this to get to the Eastern end of LI where I live. You can see the bridge in the first picture.
The restaurant is called The Canal Cafe, how clever!
I had read the reviews before I went, and some diners mentioned plastic utensils.
Umm, no. I don't like plastic, so I brought utensils for the two of us. The waitress got a kick out of that. She explained that being on the canal they were limited in their pump out, and paper products saved lots of water.
I had a shrimp sandwich and my friend had fish and chips. I know people who have had their lobster salad sandwiches at $22.00 . They said they were great! Maybe I will go for that next time, on a cooler day and sit outside.
I wanted to join Yvonne for On the Menu Monday, so keeping with a nautical theme, I bought these...
and made this.
Chicken Salad in a boat of lettuce, celery and carrots.
I roasted seasoned chicken breasts and cut it into chunks. Add a splash of oj, powdered mustard, chopped onions and celery, mayo, s and p and some parsley.
Serve it in a boat (from CTS) of lettuce, carrots, etc, and give it a pickle slice eye.
Hope you are staying cool!
Thanks for stopping by. I am also joining The Tablescaper for Seasonal Sunday, albeit, late!
This has got to be the world's cutest sandwich!! Adorable! Looks like a nice spot for lunch, too. Have a great week, my friend.
ReplyDeleteOh dear Kathleen, I just love this great sandwich and the little boat bowls, just kill me!! You have the most beautiful and fun stuff...plus the best food! Terrific place for lunch...yeah, my hubby and me would've taken the flatware too, hahaha...lol! Have a great week. Love, FABBY
ReplyDeleteKathleen, what a great place for lunch. But your chicken salad 'fishwich', yum! You can make a sandwich into a party. xo,
ReplyDeleteNow I think the obvious choice for this sandwich would have been tuna or salmon....going with the theme and all. That bread is so cute.
ReplyDeleteWord that I never thought I would say....for sure
Kathleen, that is so cute. Your photos are making me long for a visit to Long Island. You do live in a beautiful spot. ~ Sarah
ReplyDeleteKathleen, These sandwiches are so adorable! And I love it in the boat. I just got 2 of those boats at CTS also! Aren't they fun? I don't know what I am going to do with them yet.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining ON THE MENU MONDAY! You brings a wonderful post full of great summer fun!
Yvonne
Oh what fun that bread is!! Love it. I also love the fact that you took your own utensils to the restaurant. Real is so much better than plastic.

Cute sandwich!Chicken salad looks perfect, that's one thing I am picky about. Looks like a nice place for lunch.
ReplyDeleteYou had me laughing about the utensils. I don't like plastic either but have never brought my own.
ReplyDeleteNow, I will...
And just where was that goldfish bread when my daughter was growing up? She would have been all over that one.
So you really brought your utensils; good for you! Love all your photos and sure envy your little corner.

ReplyDeleteI am thinking Meshchutt Beach?? :)
I absolutely love that you took your own silverware! If their chicken salad is worth $22.00, I'll bet yours would go for $36.99. Thanks for sharing your day with us. Cherry Kay
ReplyDeleteGold fish bread. HOw darling! Your chicken salad looks delicious and I love the little boat bowls. Too cute and I'm going to the store to look for Goldfish bread.
ReplyDeleteThanks,

How stinkin' cute! You are SO creative, Kathleen, honestly & your chicken salad looks yummy. I've never tried it with oj & powdered mustard...only tarragon sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to find some of that goldfish bread for the Princess! I hope they have it around here. Thanks for telling us about it & your day on the water.
fondly,
Rett
p.s. I feel the same way about camping. "Waiting for room service" is my idea of roughing it. LOL
Just too incredibly cute!!! I have never seen the Goldfish bread before. Will have to keep an eye out!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathleen, I was in NYC last week, and yes, it was hot! It's hot here where I live too (Iowa). Seems we can't get away from the heat. Your restaurant is pretty and I love the sandwich you made with the goldfish bread. Have a wonderful week and stay cool!

I feel like I almost had lunch with you at this place. Good for you to bring your only cutlery! Your azaleas look so pretty...ours are long gone here.
ReplyDeleteOh he's so cute! I knew you'd love the plastic utensils there.
ReplyDelete- The Tablescaper
I made French toast with the fish bread! At the lake of course :-) I like the idea of bringing your own cutlery!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great place for lunch! How smart of you to bring your own utensils but the flies would have bugged me too. (Not a camper either). I haven't seen that Goldfish bread yet! I'll wait till Mack gets a little older ;)
ReplyDeleteNo one but you would take flatware to a Canal Cafe...hahahhhaaa...you silly silly woman.
ReplyDeleteOur weather a little cooler..think it was 96 today. Better than 106.
Haven;t seen you around my place or any others, for that matter, for awhile.... Hope all is ok...:)
