How Do You Like Me Now?

This was a chair that was in my mom's home.  How old, I don't know, but I remember her having it reupholstered every few years.

The cushion is down and I can remember as a child reminding people to puff the cushion when they got up, much to my mother's chagrin!  Just repeating what she always told us! ;)

table 3496Last April, I decided I was going to have 2 of her chairs redone.  Yes, I found a good place to have it done, but it took me months to find the fabric.  I don't know what has happened to me, the woman who picked tile for 4 bathrooms in one afternoon!  I can't seem to make decisions quickly.

Anyway, I finally found something for all the work to be done. I got all the fabric at Duralee.

Picked up on Sat., and returned the next.  4 chairs and a sofa.  And the sofa was converted from a 2 cushion to 3, and a tight back from loose cushions.

Pretty good in a week!

I was informed it was called a FAN chair. It is in my living room.

Of the four pieces I had done, I like how this came out the best.

I think she would like it.  :)

These are the 2 fabrics I picked for the den.  But that is for another day!

And I know, it is more expensive to have furn reupholstered, but the quality is better than is what's out there.  I looked!   We didn't want leather, and I couldn't find anything of good quality unless I remortgaged the house!  :)

I am joining Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Metamorphosis Monday.

  1. Very pretty, and such wonderful memories! I agree, it's expensive, but if the furniture has good bones, it's definitely worth it. Have a blessed week and NEW YEAR! Sandi

  2. No more "poofing" the cushion!! Love the way it turned out. Can't wait to see what you did in the den with the toile! I like the computer programs where you can see what a piece of furniture will look like with various fabrics..my imagination is waning these days!

  3. Absolutely beautiful chair! The fabric is perfect. I like the den fabric also. I have two chairs that I have debated about having recovered. I like the chairs...You are right, they don't make them that way anymore...decisions, decisions!

  6. It is beautiful Kathleen! I like you telling guest to poof it up as well. If we heard it as kids how were we to know it couldn't be repeated, LOL! Can't wait to see the den.

  14. Oh, I love it! My grandmother had two chairs of a similar shape. I have always wished that they had ended up in our line of the family. I am crazy about the fan backs.

  16. I used to help my MIL with her upholstery business many years ago and that chair definitely has good bones. It looks lovely. You made a great choice of material. Take care.

  17. The chair looks fab, Kathleen! Great style!! You know I sell furniture, but sometimes, it IS better to recover something when the piece has sentimental value and there is no style replacement out there! There are still some great companies making good quality furniture, but often, customers don't want to pay the price. I am having a pair of chairs re-covered by the guy who works for us, only because I really, really like their style. When we bought them 30 years ago for our first house, WHOLESALE cost on each was $400. Yikes~ Now you know why I'm re-covering! LOL Love your red fabric choices for your next project! ~ Sue

  19. It came out beautiful! I agree, if you love a peice, have it redone. I think it is worth the money....did I tell you I have a few peices that need to be redone! I just don't find the time to look for fabric. I think you have just added one more thing to my very, very long To Do list! Happy New Year!

  20. Happy New Year, Kathleen! Wow, the chair looks lovely. Beautiful fabric. And boy, does that down cushion look comfortable!! I should do this to one of my mom's chairs that I have back in my shed, but I know, recovering IS expensive! Great job though.
    Best,
    Gloria

  23. Kathleen, the chair looks so pretty, and lucky you to find a good upholsterer. I can't wait to see the den. Loving those fabrics - of course, you know I'd love the toile. Now, I cannot believe you have been sick again. Do you take any kind of vitamins? The grinch visits you way too often - and even when it's not Christmas. When I get sick, my husband always says it's because I don't eat well. I KNOW that's not your problem. Surely you eat that beautiful, delicious - looking food you cook! Please take care of yourself. Hugs, laurie

  24. Omigosh, I can hear my girls now teasing me about frumping up the pillows. How else do you keep them looking nice!

  25. I love the fan shape of your mother's chair, Kathleen. I'm not familiar with that style and think your choice of fabric is just perfect. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the red and white toile.

I always prefer to reupholster a piece I have rather than buying something new. So I'm not the only one who gets sentimentally attached to a love seat or chair?

  26. I love how your chairs turned out, and I think the fabric selections are lovely choices.
Best part of redoing these chairs is that they were your Mom's. You can still enjoy them..and the happy 'Poofing' memories!
I'm a toile and plaid gal...so I'm looking forward to seeing how your other chairs turn out with those choices.
