Did you ever have Thumbits?

No, it is not a malady of the thumbs...

I remember ordering it when I was growing up. My dad owned a waterfront restaurant on Long Island. He built it..it is now called Paddy McGees, and looks nothing like I remember!
Every Sunday we would go for a drive and go out to eat. He liked to visit different restaurants to see what they were serving.
I was the youngest of 4 girls, and one by one the others got out of going..
I mean it was the whole day, and a 90 min ride was nothing! And you know, once you are a teenager you have much better things to do with your Sundays!

One of the things that I liked to order was steak thumbits...I googled it and couldn't find too much on it..
It is simply a grilled steak, sliced, and served on grilled garlic bread, and garlic butter on top...So a little retro snack..

I marinated a small sirloin steak and cooked it on the panini grill...made some garlic toast, and voila..a memory created..

I know they are too well done for you, so I'll eat these..

What's in the box??????????????

I mentioned I found a bargain the other day at the WSonoma Outlet.
It was nothing I needed..
Not particularly my style, but I know I could use them on a buffet table, decorated according to the holiday...

They are tagged..

They are heavy, brass, and almost 14 in high..
The price...
A mere $2.40 ..I got 2, one for each end of the buffet table..

And there's always that garage sale I am supposed to have.:)

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, and thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your visit and comments...

  1. What a wonderful gift you found for yourself, Kathleen! Every time you show one of your Wm Sonoma outlet buys I get very envious and wished we had one. Those candle holders were a great find.

I never knew that your dad had a restaurant and I had never heard of steak thumbits either. It sounds great (although the steak is a little too well done for me) ;)

  3. The steak thumbits are something I would really like...and they aren't too well done for me! They would work well on a bufet for appies too..
Kathleen, Your bargain is amazing...I never knew WS marked items that low! They must not want to carry any stock over into the next season..

  4. Looks delicious! I think they may have something like that at Robke's in Northport. I haven't been there for a while, but remember there being something like that on their menu.... maybe a while back. But, wouldn't that be a great reason to come to Northport, and you could stop in to Meadowsweet! Happy Birthday.... I didn't know, I've been so busy at the store I haven't been keeping up with my blogging friends. I hope you had a wonderful day! Great find at WS! I need to get out there again!

  8. Kathleen, I love the base of the candle holders. And yes, a GREAT buy.

The thumbits look wonderful... I wouldn't even mind that they are well done.

It's very sweet that you were able to re-create a childhood dish.

  12. What a neat story of you and your Dad. I didn't realize he owned a restaurant although you must have mentioned it before. No wonder you know how to cook/entertain for a crowd. I've never heard of steak thumbits. But looks good! Its like a steak dish I used to get at a restaurant in the town I grew up except the meat is on half of what I call a pistolet roll (like a french roll but with cornmeal on it) and then crabmeat hollandaise on top. I know it has a name..maybe steak oscar? I've seen recipes since that don't include the bread but it's essential in my opinion!

Love your candle sticks! What an excellent bargain. Can you please give me plenty of warning of when you are going to have your garage sale???? I am renting a U-Haul and coming out.
