I don’t like fish…I don’t care how you make it, uh uh..
Well, I like tuna salad, and if I have to I can get a McD’s filet o’ fish down, but all those years of fish Fridays growing up, just did me in!
So Lent is a challenge for me…8 meatless dinners..and no full of fat and calories mac and cheese, pizza, etc!
But that’s what it is supposed to be..a sacrifice.so I'll try...
My table tonight reminds me of Lent. I hope that isn’t irreverent :)…but purple is Lenten…the statues were covered in purple until Easter.
This cloth is a little funky.., ok , a lot funky..( don't worry, Sue, you didn't hurt my feelings..I'll offer it up..:) but such a good bargain, ..You know I didn’t pay that! Wouldn’t…I think it was 5.00
Not my colors at all..purple, black, brown, white, gold, green and even a little turquoise…I thought maybe I would use it for a Mardi Gras table..but I never got to it.so just an every night dinner table.
So you will have to look at last year’s here
..:)
I had these handled purple bowls I’ll use for soup…Home Goods..
Since we are having soup, I used a white tureen from Dansk as the centerpiece.
Black charger from CTS, and white dishes I got from LinensN’Things pre blogging..so no they are not from Big Lots!
Matching napkin, 99 cents also WSonoma Outlet.
Flatware by Dansk, Stems I forget, and water glasses are very old and thin, they were my mom’s.
The rounded soup spoons are Oneida. I like rounded soups spoons, and they are not that easy to find in stores..
Please stop in at Between Naps on the Porch to see what Susan has in store for us this week…
And my friend, The Tablescaper used the cloth in a fun Mardi Gras tablescape..go check it out..fun to see from everyday Lenten :) look, to party!
Now for the Big Cupcake…I made it Sunday as we had a special Valentine/Birthday dinner for my ds. ( This is an old picture, we are covered in snow!)
Here’s what it looks like after you bake it in the BIG Cupcake Pan by Wilton….
It serves the same number as a regular cake would…10 to 12..
And here it is ready to light the candle..
Happy Birthday, Son…many happy, healthy returns!
The bottom part is iced in melted chocolate icing, and the top is fresh whipped cream.
I cut the top and bottom in layers and fill with creamy chocolate icing….
Thanks for visiting…I’ll be here for Marty’s Cloche Party and Foodie Friday.
Those are some amazing cupcakes Kathleen! The table is pretty, what a deal on that tablecloth. It's so different than I am used to from you but it's good to try new things! Hugs, Cindy
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job you did on the cupcake cake! Happy Birthday to your dear son! Thank you so much for your kind words on my grandmother's birthday. I shared everyone's sweet words with her and she was very touched.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Stephanie
Kathleen, I forgot to mention. I have a family of fish-haters here, and they all loved the seasoned mahi mahi from Trader Joe's. Is there one near you? If not, I can always send you my favorite pizza recipe to help get you through Lent.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Stephanie
Good luck on the meatless days for Lent - I know you eat shrimp is that okay :)
ReplyDeleteThe giant cupcakes look good and of course you found a wonderful bargain on the tablecloth. It does look nice with the purple handled bowls.
Belated birthday wishes to your son!
Kathleen I am not much of a purple girl myself but I must say this is pretty stunning. I think you did a great job pulling it all together. Kathysue
ReplyDeleteWow, that giant cupcake is awesome!!! I've seen the mold but didn't realize how great it turns out.
ReplyDeleteLent was such a huge deal when I was growing up. No sweets, no meat, all about penance. The nuns were ruthless.
Terrific buy on that tablecloth
ReplyDeleteKathleen. Looks very 'Bohemian', and your table looks very dramatic. If I were sitting there, I'd be waiting for something 'Flaming' to be served!! lol
I can relate to 'Meatless' dinners. On Wednesdays and Fridays, during Lent, my mother would try to cook fish all sorts of ways to get my brother and I to eat it!
Happy Belated Birthday to your Son.
Love the Giant Cupcake...it's always a hit.
Thanks to you, I'm viewed as such a 'Genious' whenever I make one!
I love fish, and I always love your beautiful tablescapes. My table is a horror right now, but some day I'll have the dining room painted and then maybe I'll actually try my hand at a tablescape too:>) In the mean time, I don't blame you for "giving up eating at it for Lent!":>)
ReplyDeleteI love that tablecloth and what a deal!!! And you have the napkins too! Great for Mardi Gras! It would also be good for an international type meal. It just has a great "different" feeling and look to it! The cupcake looks delish!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a very picky fish eater. I don't eat any shellfish either because of allergies. Never could understand why our public schools had Fish Fridays until I was in about the 5th grade. Never did find that in the Bible. but I was Baptist & we had other non-biblical thinking, too!
ReplyDeleteI love your tablescape. The tablecloth is beautiful & even more so since it was a steal.

Kathleen..that big cupcake pan has been calling my name for sometime now. LOVE your cakes!!
ReplyDeleteNow, your table is so rich and beautiful. I just love the colors and those purple handled bowls are gorgeous!!
As usual, a treat to visit you!!
Blessings!
Gail
You get the best deals:) I must admit you also do a great job on the cupcake..I should take mine out..I've been coveting the heritage pan..I better make a big cupcake soon~
ReplyDeleteA beautiful table and oh my to that cupcake! Even as a notsomuch chocolate fan, I'm ready to dig right in! (I think you could have even used that tablecloth to support The Saints during the Superbowl!)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to say that I did not get to my Mardi Gras decorations this year (Cindy Mac started me out many years ago with Mardi Gras decorating)! And I didn't even find all of my Valentine Decorations this year either - just an off year for me.
We are also having meatless soup tonight and I'll be thinking of you, Kathleen.
Your table is beautiful, Kathleen and that cupcake! Wow! I need to get one of those pans.
ReplyDeleteWe had tuna salad and it was so good. We haven't had it since summer, so it really tasted good. But then I like fish.:-)
Fish Fry starts Friday night. J will be frying fish one or two Friday's for the KC's. I should feature one of those meals on Foodie Friday. They really do have good fish at the KC's. Cooked outside. Somehow that always makes it taste better, to me. The sides aren't bad either. Potato salad, slaw, and maybe a couple of those fried potatoes, they fry to clarify the oil. Those are the best fried potatoes and not served with the meal, ya have to have a connection to get those! We'll get carryouts, from the first frying...around 4pm. J's not frying this week.
I thought sure I would be seeing a Mardi Gras table from you tonight!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting tablecloth...you could use several different colors with it. I really like those little purple soup bowls...don't think I have seen them in purple...in fact I see very little purple when out shopping.
A happy birthday to the daddy of 4 of the cutest kids I have ever seen! Love the gigantic cupcake...I want mine in chocolate.
Well, I'm just beside myself over that BIGGGG cupcake. That is the cutest thing I've ever seen..must have one to bake for grands. They would love that!!
ReplyDeleteYour tablecloth is beautiful..love the white dishes, too.
Fish, in NO form, is allowed at my table...well, unless we are eating out...then, I make him go sit at another table...no...not really. Bill does love fish and I sure don't. LOVE to catch them, tho.:)
Tuna makes me head for the hills!!
xo bj
Love the header picture, Kathleen ... the mask, the fleur-de-lis napkin ring, the harlequin napkin, fantastic.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite big cupcake of yours is the one with the whipped cream. I love the idea of cutting into layers and fill with icing. I would love to see a picture of how you slice the cake. Do you separate it?
that's an amazing cupcake! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun tablescape! Love the big cupcake... yummy!
ReplyDeleteDee Dee
Kathleen, those handled purple bowls are terrific - very unique! Also love the tablecloth even if it isn't YOUR colours. Your Mardi Gras header is perfect for today! I'm giving up desserts for Lent as well as trying to get some exercise and clean some closets...and certainly most important, do more Bible reading! Your BIG cupcake cake is wonderful and happy belated to your DS!
ReplyDeleteDD
The cupcake's really tempting, Kathleen. And the table is so pretty, love the colors, soup bowls and tureen...Christine

I'm a no shellfish girl but I do like regular fish. It is one of those things people either love or hate I think.
ReplyDeleteYour tablecloth is beyond words. I love it. It makes me think of Russia. Did I mention I love it? I did? Well I really, really do.
Not my colors either but it is amazing.
Wow, this is all great! Love the banner picture, and the tablecloth, square bowls, etc!
ReplyDeleteI don't like fish either. I do like fried shrimp, but it is bad for us! I'm also Catholic and we'll eat meatless meals on Fridays during Lent. I like meatless meals and don't eat a lot of meat, so not much of a sacrifice for me! ;-)
That big cupcake looks so good! My daughter has one of those big c.c. pans, she bought it for my grandson's first birthday, they are fun!
Love your TT! See you at the cloche party!!
Katherine
Hi Kathleen...Okay let me be the first to say that was one ugly tablecloth you found there at WS...but you managed to make it look fabulous with your choice of dishes and all....Bravo!....to the best bargain hunter in the Hamptons!!....I loved the purple baking dish....and the tablecloth...not nearly as bad as the yellow and purple toile one that they had for sale....

Love your table and the cupcake is awesome!
Have a great day!
Carol
I love the colors in the tablecloth - great buy. The giant cupcake is adorable, so tempting to run a finger through all that whipped cream.
ReplyDeleteThud! You had me at that beautiful tablecloth. Not my colors either, but definintely good for Mardi Gras! Love the header too. And that big cupcake. OK, I love everything Kathleen. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI LIKE the tablecloth & napkins & sure wish we had a WS outlet nearby! You did a beautiful job with your cool soup bowls & tureen but that cupcake takes top awards! Happy Birthday to your son....I know he had to love seeing that. :D
ReplyDeletefondly,
Rett
p.s. Last year's tablescape in the header is awesome!
Call me crazy but I love that tablecloth!! The colors are so bright and perfect for your tablescape!
ReplyDeleteThe cupcake looks wonderful - I like the way you do the whipped cream icing...makes you feel just a little bit less guilty! (just a little)
Kathleen, I'll tell you what I like about that giant chocolate cupcake, I could gobble up the whole darn thing and still admit—with a clear conscience— that I only had ONE cupcake.
ReplyDeleteWeight Watchers does not need to know the details.
And I love all the colors on your tablecloth, even the gold, and I'm not big on that color. But your table came together beautifully!
Oh, and please, send me the fishies you won't be eating.
Since you must have cabin fever and have rearranged all your dish cabinets a few times feel free to bake up a bakers dozen of those HUGE cupcakes and send them down to me and Sue. Oh and be sure to frost them in the colors of the tablecloth:) Seriously it looks pretty. I hope you have a snow-less weekend. My son said to just send mental health workers to his house as they are nuts from the snow and cabin fever:) It is sunny today here but cold and I am babysitting Mr. Vundervants so I am totally exhausted and it is only 9:50 AM but atleast I can bundle him up and take him out.
ReplyDeleteJoyce

ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous table and the cupcake is awesome too! I'm so glad I stopped by today!
ReplyDeleteOh...I am so happy to see a different Sue speak up about the tablecloth. I was trying to figure out if I'd said something about something!
ReplyDeleteI think tablescaping makes us look at things that maybe aren't our normal style (maybe they are just a great price) and work with it. I love that...it exercises the creative muscle a bit.
I want one of those cupcake pans...how fun is that? You made it look so perfect, I'd be afraid my whipped cream would be pouring down the sides.
Sue
Love your tablescape. So beautiful. Come by and watch our vlog version. Have a great day. Holly:)
ReplyDeleteWow...I love this table, Kathleen!! I think the tablecloth is gorgeous! And the dishes go perfectly. It looks fit for royalty (Elton John stopping by?)
